Duplicate Computer on Network

Another computer with the same name exists on the network.

Two computers must never run the same Active Directory database at the same time! This can cause serious confusion on your network and can create errors in AD replication.

To prevent this problem, when you run UMove on the destination computer it will carefully scan your network to see if the source computer is also connected. UMove will scan DNS, WINS, NETBIOS, and the Network Neighborhood in order to try to find the source computer.

If UMove finds the source computer it will warn you and abort.

How To Fix This Error

Disconnect the source computer from the network. If you are doing a test move, disconnect the destination computer and move it to an isolated test lab.

If the source computer is already disconnected and the error persists, search your DNS and WINS servers for a stale record that contains the name or Internet address of the disconnected source computer.

Stale network records can be found in any of these locations:

  • DNS A or PTR records.
  • DNS SRV records. Look for the domain name as well as the computer name.
  • WINS records. Look for the domain name as well as the computer name.
  • The file \Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or the file lmhosts. Check for these files on all domain controllers.
