Windows Server 2003 Release 2 (R2)

UMove is fully compatible with Windows Server 2003 Release 2 (R2) and with Small Business Server 2003 R2.

Upgrading from Server 2003 non-R2 to Server 2003 R2

If you want to replace your old computer running Windows Server 2003 with a new computer running Windows Server 2003 Release 2 (R2), you can use UMove to move Active Directory from the non-R2 server to the R2 server. The old computer can run either the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) edition of Windows Server 2003. The procedure is shown below.

You need to upgrade the Active Directory schema by running adprep. For your convenience the instructions for running adprep are given below. If you already ran adprep on the source computer you can skip the procedure.

  1. Install Windows Server 2003 Release 2 (R2) on the destination computer.
  2. Install UMove and load Active Directory into the destination computer.
  3. Run adprep to add the new R2 object schema to Active Directory:
    • Insert the Windows Server 2003 R2 disc.
    • Run D:\CMPNENTS\R2\ADPREP\ADPREP.EXE /forestprep
      (The exact path will vary.)

This will apply the R2 object schema to Active Directory.

You only need to run adprep on the DC that owns the Schema Master FSMO role. This is usually the first domain controller installed in the AD forest.

More Information

If you previously installed Windows Server 2003 R2 on another DC that has the Schema Master FSMO file, you do not need to run adprep. This is because the other DC has already run adprep and installed the R2 object schema into AD.

You only need to run adprep once. You can run adprep either before or after you run UMove. (It is not harmful if you run adprep multiple times or run it on the wrong DC. It will display an error message and quit without changing anything.)

To determine if adprep was already run see KB917385.
