Remote Desktop Operation

Remote Operation for Backup

UMove is designed to run from remote desktop software (e.g., PCAnywhere, DameWare, Microsoft RDP, etc) when doing a backup operation. No special procedures are necessary.

Remote Operation for Restore

Server 2008: UMove is designed to run from remote desktop software (e.g., PCAnywhere, DameWare, Microsoft RDP, etc). No special procedures are necessary.

Server 2000/2003: If the target destination computer is already a domain controller (DC) then UMove will be forced to temporarily reboot it into DSRM to do the restore. DSRM is a 'safe' boot mode that runs minimal services. Booting DSRM may terminate remote-PC services. So when booting DSRM you may need be at the new computer's console to run UMove.

If the new computer is not already a DC then you can use remote desktop software. This is because there is no DSRM on a non-DC. However for best practice we recommend using the console so that you have the option to undo the restore operation if necessary. Undo on Server 2000/2003 requires DSRM.

See Directory Services Restore Mode.
