Prepare the Destination Computer for Exchange

Before installing Exchange you must first prepare the destination computer by installing the following Windows components:

Install IIS

Install IIS as part of the preparation step.

Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010

Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 both require a 64-bit server operating system (x64). Exchange 2010 requires Windows Server 2008 (non-R2 or R2).

For VM testing allocate at least 1.5GB of memory and at least 8GB of free disk space. For a production server allocate at least 4GB of memory and 16GB of disk space. Exchange 2007/2010 requires the following Windows components:

  • Install the Web Server (IIS) role, including
    • ASP.NET
    • IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility
    • Windows Authentication
Requirements for Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2008 (R2)

You will need to download and install .NET updates and run commands in Windows PowerShell to add the required features (Add-WindowsFeature). For details see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691354.aspx.

Requirements for Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64

If you are installing Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64, you will need to download and install the following additional software components:

Exchange 2003
  • Install Internet Information Services (IIS), including
    • .NET Framework 2
    • ASP.NET
    • NNTP Service
    • SMTP Service
    • World Wide Web Service
Exchange 2000
  • Install Internet Information Services (IIS), including
    • NNTP Service
    • SMTP Service
    • World Wide Web Service
