DCPROMO Not Necessary

DCPROMO.EXE is the Microsoft utility that promotes a new Windows Server to run as an Active Directory domain controller.

When you prepare the destination computer for UMove, it is not necessary to run DCPROMO.

If you run DCPROMO it will attempt to create a new unrelated domain controller. If your destination computer is on the live network DCPROMO will detect the duplicate computer on the network and refuse to proceed.

If you run DCPROMO on an isolated network, you will create an unwanted new domain controller and/or a new forest.

This is not harmful; it will simply take longer to move AD. UMove will be forced to reboot the computer to temporarily switch to Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM). It will then run as normal, overwriting the unnecessary AD information that DCPROMO copied to your computer.
